Sight words are words that are recognized by sight rather than by sounding out.
They may be high-frequency words or words that do not comply with standard
phonetic pronunciation; most sight words are function words within a sentence.
In order to achieve reading fluency and comprehension, students must attain
ample sight word recognition beginning in kindergarten. Word lists have been
developed to assess and assist young readers in mastering these words.
Teachers, parents, and volunteers can assess students’ sight word recognition
in order to determine ways to address their individual needs. Drill and practice,
both at school and at home, can help students become fluent readers of these words.
We complete a Sight Word Challenge
during daily opening exercises. Please practice these
sentences with your child at home as well.
Students who read fluently are more likely to comprehend the text because they don’t
have to stop to attempt word attack strategies.
