After-school Snack Recipe: Peanut Butter Balls How to be A Star
Time: 20-30 minutes
In kindergarten, we learn to read for 3 purposes: for fun, for information, and to follow directions. Recipes are a great example of reading to follow directions.
Materials Required:
  • 1 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup toasted wheat germ
  • 1 cup Rice Krispie cereal
  • Optional toppings: shredded coconut, finely chopped nuts, toasted wheat germ, melted chocolate, or crushed graham crackers
  • 2 baking sheets lined with waxed paper
  • medium size mixing bowl
  • wooden spoon
  • rubber spatula
  • measuring cups
Directions:
This make-ahead treat can be found in the September, 2004 issue of Family Fun magazine.
  1. Wash hands thoroughly.
  2. Cover baking sheets with waxed paper.
  3. In a medium-size mixing bowl, use a wooden spoon to stir together the peanut butter, honey, and wheat germ. Use the rubber spatula to fold in the Rice Krispie cereal.
  4. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls (if the dough is too sticky, add a little more cereal so that it is easy to handle).
  5. Optional: Put one (or more) of the toppings listed in a small bowl and roll or dip the peanut butter balls into it.
  6. Place the balls on the waxed paper and chill them for about 2 hours.
  7. Store those coated in wheat germ in the refrigerator; store all others in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Keep for up to one week.
  8. Eat and enjoy!
